The city of Mitad del Mundo, located north of Quito is home to the famous Monument to the Equator, built in honour to the imaginary line that divides the planet into northern and southern hemispheres. As it one of Quito, and Ecuador’s unmissable attractions, we would like to help you with information getting to Mitad del Mundo.

Mitad del Mundo, home to the famous Monument to the Equator, can be found in the municipality of San Antonio de Pichincha in Quito’s Metropolitan District, north of Quito. Mitad del Mundo is located on Av. Manuel Córdova Galarza KM 13/5 SN.

Mitad del Mundo is open 365 days a year, from 9.00am to 6.00pm. We recommend visiting on weekends as there are often cultural events happening then.

Entry to Mitad del Mundo costs 5,00 USD for adults and 2,50 USD for children aged 5 to 12 and for those who are elderly or disabled.

When visting Mitad del Mundo, don’t forget to bring a coat, comfy clothes, a hat, sunglasses, suncream, a camera and your passport, which you can get stamped in the Equator Museum, where they will give you a unique stamp representing the city of the middle of the world. We also recommend you bring some money with you for food as there is a wide range of gastronomy to choose from in Mitad del Mundo.

How to get to Mitad del Mundo from Quito?

There are several ways of getting to Mitad del Mundo using various means of transport, which we will tell you all about.

By bus

You can get to Mitad del Mundo by bus on the “Mitad del Mundo” line. They pass through Avenida Mariscal Sucre, also known as Avenida Occidental, in a south-north direction. The buses leave every 30 minutes and will drop you just outside the city of Mitad del Mundo.

Similarly, you can opt for the Metrobus-Q System which heads towards the north of Quito. At Ofelia, the final stop, take the bus labelled “La Mitad del Mundo”. This bus will also drop you just outside the city of Mitad del Mundo. You can find Metrobus-Q bus stops all along Avenida América and Avenida de la Prensa.

A third option to reach the city of Mitad del Mundo is to take a Trolebús, which is an integrated bus system that crosses Quito from north to south. From Carcelén Bus Terminal there are buses that leave with Mitad del Mundo as their destination.

By car

From wherever you are in the city, head towards Avenida Mariscal Sucre, also known as Avenida Occidental. Then, take Avenida Manuel Córdova Galarza Km. 13,5  until you reach the city of Mitad del Mundo. Another option if you are going by car is to take the continuation of Avenida Simón Bolívar that goes from Carapungo to Mitad del Mundo (Avenida Manuel Córdova Galarza).

Remember to stick to speed limits to avoid accidents and speeding fines.

Taxi, Uber or Cabify

Another option to reach Mitad del Mundo is to take a yellow taxi, or opt for using one of the transport apps such as Uber or Cabify. Taking a taxi to Mitad del Mundo can be rather more expensive than public transport.

Mitad del Mundo Tour by Quito Tour Bus

The way we recommend of getting from Quito to Mitad del Mundo is to go on the Mitad del Mundo Tour offered by Quito Tour Bus. Aboard the Quito Tour Bus, you will get to know the famous Mitad del Mundo in a smooth, comfortable and fun way. We have the only double decker tour busese in the city. The tour leaves every day at 12.00pm from Naciones Unidas Boulevard. 

In the Mitad del Mundo Tour, see the Pululahua Geobotanical Reserve lookout point, from which you can observe one of the two unique inhabited craters in the world. The reserve is near Quito and is the “only protected area in the country under the ‘Geobotanical Reserve’ category” (SNAP – Ministerio del Ambiente, 2019).  This inhabited volcanic basin is particularly rich in flora and fauna. Given all of this, we highly recommend that you include it in your itinerary.

Later on, discover the Monument to the Equator located in the city of Mitad del Mundo, which you will be able to visit with priority access. We will then take you to see the Ethnographic Museum, a museum all about the Equator where you can watch amazing demostrations of natural phenomenons, the force of gravity and balance that occur in the equatorial zone. You will also have the opportunity to take your most sought-after photo with one foot in the northern hemisphere and the other in the southern one at the same time.
